AFRICA/SIERRA LeONE – New floods: Preserve the environment and avoid irresponsible disposal

Thursday, 15th September 2022

Freetown (Agenzia Fides) – The country is still reeling from the devastating floods. After the heavy rains in August 2022 (see Fides 02/9/2022), the new losses are caused by the torrential rainfalls of September 10 in Sierra Leone’s western region.
“We appeal to everyone to conserve the environment, plant trees, and stop littering irresponsibly. Fr. said that if we don’t, we will continue to be subject to the same dangers. Peter Konteh (Executive Director of Caritas Freetown) assesses damage at Kiera Chaplin Desert Flower School. Caritas Freetown runs the charity to help girls from families with low incomes. He said that the school is located at a foothill from which rocks fell, which destroyed pipes and infrastructure.
“Torrential downpours followed, with more intense rainfall. Fr. explains that the litter around blocks water flow, causing landslides as well as structural damage. Konteh is also the founder and CEO of the Desert Flower Foundation-Sierra Leone.
He said that water carried debris along the way, including heavy rocks, which settled on the roofs and buildings of the school complex. A six-month-old girl was running to safety when a large boulder landed on her. The woman, in pain and confusion, dropped her baby who was swept away into the rushing water. Later in the day, the body of the child was found and buried.
The priest appealed to the communities affected by these severe environmental calamities to help reduce them. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 15/9/2022)
