AFRICA/D.R. CONGO – Barbarism In Kikwit: A priest killed by armed bandits

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) – “Bishop Timothée Bodika Mansiyai of Kikwit, is deeply saddened to announce to his faithful and to all people of good will the sad news of the death of Father Godefroid Pembele Mandon. “We recommend the soul of deceased to your prayers,” reads Father Francis-Emmanuel Kimwanga’s death notice. It was broadcast on diocesan radio on Aug 7, 2022.
“Fr. Pembele was gunned down by gunmen as he tried to storm the church in the parish St. Joseph Mukasa, Kikwit, on the night August 6-7 2022. He was taken to Kinshasa, where he died on Sunday, August 7, 2022 at Olive Lembe Kabila Hospital, Nsele district.
Another attack occurred in the night, August 6-7, 2022. Gunmen attacked another Kikwit parish, Saint Murumba. They “robbed women who were preparing to celebrate the first Mass of the new priest and a set of catechists, taking many personal belongings.”

A prominent representative of the local Catholic Christian community, Mr. TheskyMayoko, expressed condolences and said: “I share the grief that the entire Catholic Christian community in Kikwit.” I strongly condemn the barbarism currently in Kikwit.
