Libya’s east-based strongman Khalifa Haftar and one of Libya’s Prime Ministers Abdul Hamid Dbeibah have expressed their support for the ongoing large-scale demonstrations calling for elections and better living condition in the oil-rich North African country.

Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) said in a statement it declares its “full support for the popular will and for the demands of the citizens.”

The LNA also urged protesters to peacefully demonstrate and warned them not to vandalize private and public facilities. It also affirmed that it will “take the necessary measures” to preserve the independence of the Libyan will “if any party attempted to unilaterally abuse it for the benefit of any foreign entity”.

According to Libya Observer, Dbeibah, who heads the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, (GNU), also supported the protest.

Twitter: The ex-businessman turned politician claimed he joined the protesters demanding elections and the removal of all current political entities, including his government.

He targeted the House of Representatives (HoR), an internationally recognized Libyan legislature. He accused the parliament of preventing the holding of elections.

Friday’s protestors stormed the HoR headquarters at Tobruk in an attempt to demand that the various state bodies be removed and for elections to be held.

Dbeibah was dismissed by the HoR in February. Fati Bashagha (a former Interior Minister) was selected by the HoR as Dbeibah’s replacement.

Dbeibah refused resignation and pledged to give power only to an elected government.
