In consultation with Sudanese as well as international partners, the Special Representative for the Secretary-General Sudan and Head UNITAMS, Mr. Volker Perusses is officially launching an UN-facilitated intra-Sudanese Political Process. This is designed to help Sudanese parties agree on a way out the current political crisis, and agree on a sustainable pathway towards democracy, peace, and prosperity.

UNITAMS was established in 2020 by Security Council Resolution (2020) in response of requests from the Sudanese leadership to support the democratic transition to Sudan. Since the 25 October military coup, the country has been through major setbacks. The violence against peaceful protestors only served to increase the distrust among all political parties. SRSG Volker Perthes is deeply concerned that the current political impasse may slide the country further into instability and squander the important political, social and economic gains made since the Revolution. All attempts to reverse the current course of the transformation have failed to meet the aspirations and expectations of the Sudanese people.

It is time for an end to violence and to enter into a constructive dialogue. This process will be inclusive. All key civilian and military stakeholders, including armed movements, political parties, civil society, women’s groups, and resistance committees will be invited to participate in the UN-facilitated political process. Women played an important role in the revolution as well as the transition. It is crucial that they participate fully, meaningfully and equally in the future. UNITAMS depends on the full participation and cooperation of all Sudanese stakeholder to ensure its success.

The UN is committed to supporting the realization the aspirations for freedom, justice and peace of the Sudanese people.
